WHAT YOU SHOULD BE DRINKING RIGHT NOW: THE STREAMLINED OLD FASHIONED

The Manhattan has taken me through many moments, and many evenings. I love the rich bourbon and bitter flavor that lingers in my mouth, making each sip a worthwhile investment from the elegant cocktail. However to add to my repertoire for imbibing, I perused an old bar tenders manual and came across the Old Fashioned. I see that there are immense variations in which you can create this cocktail, sugar cubes being muddled with fruit and topped with bright red cherries. Not for me. To muddle orange slices in a syrupy concoction that needs a vulgar maraschino garnish doesn't quite garner a sophisticated sipping experience. I prefer to streamline my recipe that is based on what classic bar tenders prepare. This isn't the old fashion Old Fashioned, its sharp and classic, just like your suit should be.

I begin with adding a half teaspoon of natural sugar to a rocks glass. The juice from a wedge of an organic lemon. Several bold dashes of bitters (I know not everyone is a fan of bitters, but I happen to love their presence in a drink) and I add one shot of bourbon. I begin to stir and add ice, layering another shot of bourbon, more ice and yes, why not, one more shot of bourbon. I stir my cocktail until the glass is frosted. I add a Bing cherry then sit in a wing chair, and sip my day away.

Dashing Holiday Rule #26: Velvet Slippers

"Where do I wear the perpetually trending smoking slipper?" The elegant house shoe seems to be getting quite a bit of editorial runs by your favorite men's periodicals, Mr. Porter practically will send you a pair with every purchase, and for everyone in the know, they seem to own a pair, even your girlfriend.
My favorite slipper from Palm Beach's Stubbs & Wootton

The slippers date back to the Victorian era, when gentleman would entertain in their homes and the dress was black tie. The shoe could be worn with a tuxedo or dress pants and smoking jacket. Prince Albert was famed for donning them and thus became the Albert Shoe from Church's in London.

In this era, we see hip guys pairing them with everything from shorts to jeans. I have to say, that daytime wear for these might be a bit much. I choose to wear them to cocktail parties, evenings at the theatre and fine watering holes. Anyplace that involves a bit of lounging is perfect for wearing a smoking slipper.

10 Things to Help You Survive the Flu Like a Gentleman

There you are at your desk, in the midst of emails and phone calls, however you can't seem to move, yes here it comes...the onset of influenza. The miserable condition strikes when you least can manage it, making you appear and feel at your very worst.

Well things can get a bit better; with a list of must haves (compiled by yours truly) you too can be a gentleman and survive the flu with some style.
1. Pajamas. I prefer them from Derek Rose. The tailoring and fabric of these PJs are perfect. My couple pairs has lasted years. I do iron them, they feel more comfy pressed.
2. Slippers. When fallen under the weather, I believe its important to surround yourself with warm and soft things, these"Smere"(cashmere) slippers from Ralph Lauren keep my toes warm when heading to the kitchen for more tea.
3. Cough syrup can be as miserable as domestic Scotch, however when served in a crystal tumbler, the flavors may open up. By the end of your rest, I do not recommend it served on the rocks.
4. Tissue boxes always stand out no matter how decorative the packaging,  I prefer to use nickel boxes from Restoration Hardware. This also keeps your bedroom looking less like a hospital room.

5. Soup can be satisfying when you don't have the energy to chew, but chicken noodle just reminds me of illness, I like keeping a few cans of butternut squash bisque around from Cambell's. Thomas Keller still doesn't have delivery.
6. I discovered this tea in college when working in theatrical productions and I love the flavor and how soothing the natural marshmallow is. I drink a couple pots of this when I'm down with a cold.
7. Sometimes you just need a Scotch, when you're sick you'll need two Scotches. I find this goes well with the Throat Coat tea for a hot toddy. Tomatin provides a great value, and is delightfully balanced.

8. I find when I'm stuck at home with the flu, it is important to shower and even shave at some point. Creed's Original Santal is a warm and spicy scent that envelopes your senses... even with a stuffed up schnoz. Spray a few spritzes of the cologne on your blanket.
9. There is not material that can actually make you feel better when wrapped up in it like smere can. I recommend every gentleman have a blanket made out of cashmere. Perfect when your sick or feeling better with a movie date. I found mine at Restoration Hardware at a post season sale.

10. Its difficult to disconnect from the office with the ease of checking emails and texts, however when sick, it's best to sign off and try to rest. I love turning to Turner Classic Movies and watching it for the day, the films and their eras will transcend you from your sick bed.

Man Of The Hour: Tom Wolfe

There is debate in wearing clothing that causes people to remember what you wore and not who you were; one thing that is safe to say is that author, Tom Wolfe is memorable not only for his signature white suit, but his body of work.

With his latest novel, Back To Blood just being released, we can't help but see images of the flamboyant author and his impeccable tailoring. His uniform is a custom made white suit, two toned shoes and homburg hat. Mr Wolfe's suits are designed by New York tailor Vincent Nicolosi, recently retired, Nicolosi suits were almost completely hand made, very few machine stitches could even be spotted in the interior canvas. Each suit is guaranteed for 20 years. Wolfe was known to change his suit after 6 hours to maintain a pristine appearance.

Having a signature style is a bold way to brand yourself, and let people know what your about before they actually get to know you. Transform your look slowly and don't be too brash in what you choose, however a white suit has done wonders for the Colonel, Ricardo Montalban and Mr. Wolfe

The Packing List: Business Trips

When traveling on business it is imperitive that you have everything you need to stylishly move about your trip's itinerary  and stand out from the rest while doing it. Presented here, are some of my "essentials" that are needed for your next venture.

1. Additional white shirt, you wish you had one if you didn't pack it.

2. Shoe Horn, some hotels provide them, but you can't always count on ever amenity being in your room, unless the company has booked you at the Ritz Carlton.

3.  Evian Brumistaeur, yes this is a can of water. But what this fine mist does is quickly hydrates the face, causing your tired, jet lagged and hungover mug to look more revived.

4. Church Air Travel Slippers. These lightweight leather slippers are perfect for transatlantic business flights or getting settled into your hotel room.

5. Microfiber Cloth, perfect for keeping watches, glasses and cuff links free of finger prints and other smudges.

6. Sample Vials of Your Favorite Scent. Ask your sales person to create these for you before your departure, no need to take the entire glass bottle.

7. Black Leather Sneakers. A comfortable yet cool shoe to help tired feet get you from your last meeting to the bar across the street. I love Gucci's double strap version because it shares the same silhouette of a dress shoe.

8. Black blazer This is a piece that should be a no brainier. A dinner with executives, a night out with the guys in accounting or drinks with the girl that checked in the same time as you did.

9. Terax Crema Conditioner. I always keep a small tube of this Italian conditioner with me as those tiny bottles in the shower don't always do the trick.

10. Travel Steamer. I have sacrificed a pair of shoes to fit this into my bag. It is my secret weapon for not looking like a weary business traveler. Sure a hotel can steam the wrinkles out of a suit, but when you need to be dressed right after check in, you tip yourself.

My 100 Years at The Beverly Hills Hotel

Have you ever stepped into a place and and immediately felt you needed a glass of Champagne? The Beverly Hills Hotel has served to be that destination for me for years. I have had some of the most enjoyable moments of my life at the famed hotel. The Polo Lounge has been a haven of cherished memories-both for those new to LA and even the glamorous locals that include politicians and celebrities. The Pink Palace, as it is known, was even the birthplace for the idea of Man About Town TV.

It isn't a hotel that offers every amenity, and I have to say, I've set foot into more beautifully appointed destinations. But the 100 year old Beverly Hills Hotel has something that no other hotel has, history. I can feel it as I pull up the winding drive lit by twinkling white lights.

The pink facade holds many secrets, many which for the most part, will never be divulged. For those in the know, the Bungalows that sit beyond the main hotel, have been the destinations for famed rendez vous between Marilyn Monroe and JFK, Liz Taylor and her love du jour. Elvis Presley was rumored to keep a bungalow available for use, even though his home was just a few blocks down Sunset. Clive Davis, founder of Arista Records has never kept a home in Los Angeles except for Bungalow 8, which has been his West Coast address since the 70's. Robert Evans' film career began poolside as a casting agent discovered the suave producer, who started out acting. The list goes on...100 years of stories, 100 years of secrets, 100 years of cocktails.

This past summer I was delighted to have been invited to the hotel's 100 year Anniversary Party. This evening kicked off a summer series of events, however, this evening was invitation only and a hosted bar.

The party was quite intimate, beginning at 7:00, the sun was just starting to dip below Sunset Boulevard. This created a luminous setting, so perfect it looked as if the party was happening on a studio back lot. Walking down the stairs to find a glistening pool lit with large orange globes set amongst bouquets of orange roses...Cointreau sponsored the night and the scent of spiced orange filled the out door space. Luca Ellis crooned Sinatra classics over the pool as the guests made their way to one of the three bars. A shaken margarita was my choice. This was no typical bar margarita. No produced and caloric mix added, the cocktail was so fresh-the drink balanced bitter and sweet perfectly. I made my way over to listen to Mr. Ellis' band, Cole Porter's I Get A Kick Out of You played. Perhaps it was the white jacket I wore that evening, or the several spritzes of Creed's Windsor, but I couldn't help but be reminiscent to an era that I was never even born in. My imagination ran to what this place would have been like in the thirties and forties..."Pardon me Mr. Grant...phone call for Mr. Gable...why hello Lana..." Alas I came to my senses and saw that this elegant setting was inhabited by LA hipsters, blond girls that were appearing in something, Hollywood executives checking their mobiles and lithe men who walked around as if they would have been able to tip-toe across the pool to the bar. Oh Los Angeles.

The Sun was just about to retire as seven beautiful girls in parasols and bikinis walked out. The Aqualillies took over the pool. These gorgeous performers are the hottest act in water ballet and they take synchronized swimming to sexy new heights. Blending the style of Busby Berkeley and electronic jazz, these ladies add glamour and elegance to any deep end they dive into.

By the last number of the Aqualillies, I ran into my lovely friend Kaila, making Beverly Hills just that homey kind of town, where you really do run into people. This then turned into meeting a group of her friends which included the assistant to the headliner that evening. We made our way to the bar and sipped on a light cocktail of Cointreau and club. The pool was glistening under the lamps that lit the cabanas and we all were anticipating the last performance of the evening.

Dita Von Teese would be the final act of the night and as we chatted up her assistant, I could only hope for a chance meeting. Dita has been dubbed the queen of burlesque. I had seen her years ago at Spider, and recalled her alluring way in which her almost alabaster skin caught light as she moved, not danced-to music. She could transfix a room whether it be a multi-story night club or small poolside soiree, causing the men in the room to forget that this was the former Mrs. Marilyn Manson.

As glittering multi-colored palm fronds became lit at the far end of of the pool, the cabana lights dimmed and Ms. Von Teese emerged. It took her just over seven minutes to remove the veiled layers of an evening gown and become a very disrobed Dita as she pranced behind large feathered fans. Even the very "lithe" men had their mouths open. The poolside onlookers cheered.

We dashed over to the VIP cabana for a glass of champagne. The crowd of VIP's and "filler" guests were moving in on Dita. Hopefully my chance to be meet would not be lost. I then made eye contact with the lovely assistant I met earlier, she gave me look to wait. I then thought, what would I say to her, what vocalised jewel could I drop to leave an impression. At this moment I was introduced to Dita, we posed for a picture and she looking very much like a picture herself in a beaded evening gown-the only thing she took off in front of me that night was her shoes. I really don't even recall what I uttered...clearly not a vocal gem. Natalie Portman then joined her and soon it was time to say ciao.

Slowly the cabanas darkened and the music stopped. The bartenders blew out the candles and the guests made their way up the stairs to either the Polo Lounge or the valet. I stopped and and looked up at the Pink Palace. It stood there, grand, regal and pink. It was a 100 years old, and if you don't know, things in LA don't like to age, and that night, the old place felt new again.

Bijan, Power Dressing To A T.

Anyone that has been to Beverly Hills and walked by the Bijan boutique on Rodeo Drive knows that place is a sartorial circus of opulence, with tourists clamoring around the facade trying to see what a "by appointment only" shopping experience is truly like.

For those that aren't familiar with Bijan, his clothes have been worn by hundreds of names in politics, entertainment, sports and even royalty. Although his ties and suits have been donned by several Presidents, I can say some of Bijan's designs have blurred the line between mogul and pimp. Alligator seems to be the only hide suitable for footwear. There is no shortage of man fur coats and color is always in fashion. And why not add an animal headed walking stick to your look?

Since I was a youngster, Bijan's windows have always made me stop and look. The man knew about spectacle in retail. He was pure Beverly Hills, from the marble to the white carpet and the fact that silk was everywhere, Bijan's store was something of a Mecca for the luxury-set. Today, the looks in the windows are still as colorful as they were in 1987, and the list of "clients" grows on the lower thirds of the glass, giving you a sense that someone must be making an appointment to shop for a blue chinchilla fur overcoat and a lime green silk evening jacket (that would even have made the late, Gianni Versace say "wow"). Walking around Los Angeles, you don't see many gents wearing silk shirts that match their alligator loafers, from time to time you see the tanned, white haired gentleman holding court in a far booth at the Polo Lounge dressed in one of Bijan's red blazers. Prestigious retailers like Bijan are still around Rodeo; Battaglia, Stefano Ricci, all play to the idea of dressing like a Beverly Hills businessman. Currently, being matched to a T and toting ostentatious accessories made out of semi-extinct creatures may be a tad demode but sometimes a dash of unexpected color here or a secret wild jacket lining can enable you set yourself apart in a culture that spends so much time looking as if they didn't spend so much time. When disheveled is de riguer take a cue from the late Bijan, who always has had something different to offer: "With respect to all of the other designers here in Beverly Hills, I design for the designer. Armani, de la Renta and the lot, I design what they wear. They come to me for a different look because I offer uniqueness. I'm not like Cartier that makes thousands of the same watches or Calvin Klein who makes the same pair of jeans over and over..."

Bijan passed away in 2011, his home in Beverly Hills just recently went on the market, $11,995,000 will get you the true Bijan lifestyle, included is the custom made chandelier crafted out of Bijan cologne bottles.
Check out the images.

A Vacation Bottled: Creed's Virgin Island Water

Sir Richard Branson and I share very few things in common. He is British, I am American. He has an international airline. I pay to fly on it. He's a business magnate worth 4.2 Billion, I have a blog. However Sir Richard and myself have a penchant for tropical destinations. And seeing that I can not escape by private plane out to my own personal island, I do the next best thing, spray on The House of Creed's Virgin Island Water. The scent that celebrates the journey to the Virgin Islands. Rumor has it, this is Branson's scent.

I recently discovered this cologne and thought it would be a perfect summer scent. Sugar cane, white rum, ginger, lime, coconut... it's cocktails, sand and sun, nothing I enjoy more.

If you decide to take the plunge with Sir Richard and I, and purchase Creed's V.I.W. you might be put off by the first notes of sugar and coopra, according to Creed, this is the white inner portion of the fruit . Yes, it smells like suntan lotion. But allow some time and chemistry to work this fragrance into an elegant skin scent that blends jasmine into the mix. You sir, will smell like you just set sail to your own private oasis.

A little Come Fly With Me on the IPod, a mojito in hand, and a spritz of Virgin Island Water ...welcome summer.

No One Does It Better Than Ralph Lauren

I admit, the latest from Ralph Lauren's Purple Label looks more like a central casting catalog for the latest Gatsby film than a Look Book for a current clothing line. We all know the roaring twenties has inspired Lauren, yet many other menswear designers have been heavily influenced by the "Jazz Era" in the up-and-coming seasons. However in my opinion, no one does the classics as well as R.L. For those that have worn a purple label dress shirt, or knotted a sevenfold tie from the collection, you will know that it is all worth it.

Shot in Malibu, California, here is Purple Label Spring 2012 (I had to have the black and white wingtips)

Wearing white is hard to pull off without looking like the guy from Fantasy Island. Update your Summer suits with fresh shades of Navy.
A collar pin is an accessory that is true twenties, wear them with forward point collars only.

If I happen to be fortunate enough to own property in Malibu, this is how I plan to dress when at home.

An Ode To Mr. Astaire, From Paul Stuart

If you haven't seen a Fred Astaire film lately, you really should look into catching one on Turner Classics. Astaire has been known for his sartorial panache since his 1933 film debut, Dancing Lady.
His effortless elegance is something to emulate, and this season Paul Stuart brings a custom collection that is inspired by the legendary actor. Swank...pure swank.

A vintage print pocket square adds just enough throwback to a look that is still fresh in 2012.

“I’m putting on my top hat,
Tying up my white tie,
Brushing off my tails.
I’m duding up my shirtfront,
Putting in the shirt studs,
Polishing my nails…”
Note the tie bar placement, Mr. A always wore his low.
